-- Welcome to DitmoreCenter.com! --

This website was created in 2004 by and for the Ditmore family. Since 1999, the Ditmore family has been meeting on the Web. Our first forum was a site sponsored by Yahoo. As of this time this group is still active, so family and friends may wish to visit this sister site as well at: Yahoo! Groups - ditmorecenter.

Ditmore is believed to be an anglicized version of the name Ditmar or other Germanic name, originating in Bavaria. There is no known record of the name Ditmore prior to the 1600's. It is an unusally uncommon name, and is likely that all persons carrying this surname may be related by blood. Today less than 400 Ditmore families are scattered throughout the United States, and only about a dozen in the United Kingdom. The vast majority of Ditmores living in the United States today descend from John Ditmore and Eliza Hendrickson, who were married in 1809 at Hampstead, a village outside of Charleston, South Carolina. This couple had 10 children: Edward H. Ditmore, John Hendrickson Ditmore, Mary Ditmore Jack, Eliza Louisa Ditmore Rhodes, Vincent Gary Ditmore, Emelina Ditmore Brock, Caleb Starr Ditmore, Henry M. Ditmore, Francis Marion Ditmore and Charles Willis Ditmore. About 1820 this family left Charleston and moved to the very edge of the emerging American frontier, settling in eastern Tennessee. After the removal of the Cherokee Nation in the historic Trail of Tears, many from this family settled in the mountains of western North Carolina. Today this family is scattered from the East Coast to the West - from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico.

While this site has been created by the descendents of John and Eliza, anyone with the name Ditmore or anyone claiming a Ditmore ancestor of unknown origins is welcomed to join this site as a member. Our hope is that together we can use this as a forum to share family history and strengthen family ties for generations to come.

If you have any questions, please do not hestitate to contact us!
