John Ditmore's Last WillOn June 19, 1830, John Ditmore wrote: "State of Tennessee, McMinn County, Athens - I John Ditmore knowing that life is uncertain full devise to have my last will and testament desire on record, first of all things command my spirit to Him that gave it and my body to the ground for this worlds goods dispose of in the following manner viz: first to my companion Eliza Ditmore I bequeath the plantation which I now live it being a part of the North East quarter of section 26 Township 5 Range 1 W of the Meridian and part of the NE quarter so as to include all the holding and the farm where we live which lines are designated in the presents [sic] Samuel Riggs, James Jackson, and Edward Ditmore which shall be her lifetime and the remaining parts of all my lands I bequeath to my six sons: viz. Edward H., John, Vincent, Caleb, Henry, Francis Ditmore to be equally divided and to my 3 daughters: Mary, Lisa, Emaline one dollar each and a second bequeath to my wife Liza Ditmore. Late a parcel of ground in the town of Calhoun where in the county aforesaid Lot No. 41 and respecting stock, hogs, horses and cattle I leave to my companion Liza Ditmore and there being a certain sum coming to me, John Ditmore, of the state of South Carolina, of kinship of the amount of 400 dollars more or less which sum I bequeath to the said companion Liza Ditmore all of which will and desire I leave on record in the presents [sic] of assigned." Deborah June “Debbie” Ivens, 45, of Athens, died Thursday, June 14, 2007, at SkyRidge Medical Center in Cleveland.

A member of the Athens Church of Christ, she was secretary of the McMinn County Historical Society. A teacher for 19 years at McMinn County High School, she was a former Teacher of the Year for McMinn County and the State of Tennessee. She was chair of the Science Department at MCHS, where she taught chemistry and honors chemistry. She was head of “Big Kids Do Science,” a program for honors students. She was serving her third term as president of the MCEA (McMinn County Education Association). She was District 3 Representative and a board member of the Tennessee Science Teachers Association. She was serving as secretary of the Alpha Lambda Chapter of the Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority.
